The three type of love in Howl's Moving Castle

With his cascading blond locks, a handsome countenance tinged with a touch of melancholy, and graceful manners, is there anyone who hasn't fallen for this flawless man after watching "Howl's Moving Castle"? Confess! I'm convinced I'm not the sole one who slipped into Sophie's shoes and revealed in the fantasy of being enamoured with Howl! But, did you catch that there are multiple relationships at play in this show? Let me spill the tea... heehee.

Agape— The Scarecrow

Originally hailing from a neighbouring realm as a prince, the Scarecrow found himself cursed into a scarecrow form due to a fateful relationship. Only the kiss of a true love can break the curse. In the glasslands, Sophie unintentionally rescued him, mistaking him for a crutch. Following that encounter, Sophie's kindness resonated, and though she departed, the grateful Scarecrow stuck around. He stood by Sophie's side, aiding her in her journey to the castle, and providing unwavering assistance whenever needed! What a heartwarming character, right?

In the finale, he finally received Sophie's heartfelt, distressed kiss when he selflessly sacrificed himself to lift the curse for everyone. However, when he expressed his gratitude too Sophie, her focus remained unswervingly on Howl, unintentionally sidelining the Scarecrow. (Someone, give him a hug!) Yet, undeterred, he hinted at persisting in waiting for Sophie's affections to evolve. (More people come! TAT)

Mania— The Witch

Raise your hand if you've detected the intricate dynamics between the witches, Sophie, and Howl, akin to encountering a particularly intense ex. (Anyone? Come on, don't just glance at me!) Interestingly, the original book hints that the witch might have been Howl's first love, having been responsible for his loss of innocence.

Undoubtedly, the witch fixates on Howl's heart. Even stripped of her powers, her attention remains transfixed on Calcifer (symbolising Howl's heart). As Howl's abilities wane and Calcifer begins to expose his heart, the witch desires to claim it for herself. She hesitantly entrusts it to Sophie after her sincere plea, urging her to safeguard this delicate heart.  Witnessing her ex and his newfound love revel in happiness ignites her jealousy, leading to desires of pursuit and even harm. A perfectionist by nature, she believes in the fabrication of true love, exemplifying the epitome of passionate yet erratic affection.

Pragma— Sophie

As the eldest daughter, Sophie possesses a level of maturity setting her apart from her peers. This maturity is reflected in her demeanor, contrasting with her youthful appearance. This unique trait infuses wisdom and sophistication into her being. Who can gaze at their aged reflection after decades and reassure themselves with thoughts like, "It's alright, at least I appear healthy, and my attire is more suitable now"? Bravo! Her connection with Howl evolves gradually, rooted in mutual companionship, shared trials, and unwavering support through thick and thin. Only later, after traversing time and space and discovering Howl's enduring devotion, does she openly reveal her emotions. Just as Pragma is built on enduring friendship, pursuing a steady, comfortable, and harmonious interaction.

Well, which type of individual do you believe you fit into? The scarecrow who dedicates all attention to their beloved, disregarding their own needs, the wild witch fervently grasping onto the past, or Sophie, yearning for a companionship with her partner akin to that of a friend?
