Over the pandemic era (god I feel old saying the word era), I’m certain that many of us have found ourselves in long-distance relationships, whether by choice or circumstance. Therefore, I've compiled an updated list of tips, drawn from my personal experiences and insights shared by friends, to help you maintain a thriving and healthy relationship.
Communication
- Avoid over-relying on texting. Approximately 40-50% of texts are misinterpreted. While texting is convenient, it's risky for effective communication in a long-distance relationship. Consider mixing in voice messages or even simple videos to better convey your feelings.
- Video/Audio Calls: This doesn't need much explaining. Some people prefer long-distance communication, especially if they enjoy lengthy phone conversations. If you struggle to find time, schedule calls every other day; it works wonders.
- Running out of topics? Introverts like me struggle to find topics for phone conversations. Regular check-ins can help combat this. Share fun things that happened since your last talk. Remember, it's the small details that count. If that doesn't help, try something more interactive, like planning a future trip together. eeEEeeeEeEeeEEEK I’mma plan some trips wif her :3 see ya in a bit
Surprises
- Plans: Revisit the classics – watch the same movie, read the same book, or play online games together. If you have each other's addresses, organize a date night where you order food for each other and talk over the phone. Consider contacting their family and friends to help with surprise gestures like writing love notes and hiding them in random places. Just make sure your name is clearly written on those notes!
- "Emo-box"(Emotional box): It's basically a mystery box you can only open when your partner is unavailable or you're feeling particularly moody or lonely. The box can contain small gifts, notes, or activities to pass the time until they're available. I came up with this idea during my own long-distance relationship, and it worked wonders. If you want my list of rules and how everything works, feel free to comment: "Where's my box?"
^aHhhHHHhh the memories, this went back and forth for a little while
Attitude
- Understanding and Patience: People act differently under different circumstances, especially when they move elsewhere. Be understanding of changing needs and wants. Long-distance can be tough, but patience is key.
- Trust: Trust is crucial. Share unnecessary details; what may seem insignificant to you might be important to your partner. Avoid lying or hiding anything. If someone approaches you inappropriately, it's better to inform your partner than for them to find out themselves (assuming you've done nothing wrong).
- Don't Lose Yourself: Change is hard, and you may not be able to spend as much time together. Focus on your individual growth while providing support to your partner. Do it for them <3
Overview
Remember, if you make it through this, there will be your partner waiting on the other side of the tunnel. If that's not motivation enough, consider talking to your partner or reevaluating if a long-distance relationship is what you both want. If you enjoy long-distance, first of all woaH, second of all please do share your own tips. Because sharing is caring! :D
Stay positive~
